Academics

At Shining Light Christian Academy, we believe that academic excellence and spiritual growth go hand in hand. Our curriculum integrates Biblical principles throughout every subject, helping students understand that all knowledge comes from God and can be used to glorify Him.

“The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, and knowledge of the Holy One is understanding.”

— Proverbs 9:10

Our Approach

BJU Press Curriculum

We use BJU Press educational materials, which place Biblical worldview shaping at the heart of every lesson. Rather than starting with secular assumptions, our curriculum begins with God's truth as the foundation for all learning.

Biblical Foundation

Every subject begins with God's truth as the standard. Scripture serves as the blueprint for instruction, helping students understand how faith connects to all areas of learning.

Academic Excellence

Our curriculum meets rigorous academic standards while engaging students at appropriate developmental levels. Materials incorporate current educational research and best practices.

Critical Thinking

Students learn not just what to think, but how to think. Through analysis, evaluation, and creative problem-solving, students develop essential skills for lifelong learning.

What We Teach

Core Subject Areas

Bible

Daily Bible instruction forms the cornerstone of our curriculum. Students engage with Scripture to develop a personal relationship with Christ and learn to apply God's truth to every area of life.

Reading

Our reading program cultivates lifelong readers through systematic phonics instruction, vocabulary development, and comprehension strategies. Students learn to analyze and evaluate literature across genres while developing discernment through a Biblical lens.

Writing & Grammar

Students master English conventions through sequential grammar instruction and the complete writing process. From prewriting to publishing, students learn to craft clear, effective communication in narrative, informational, and opinion formats.

Spelling

Through word study and pattern recognition, students develop spelling mastery beyond memorization. Activities include word sorting, proofreading, and dictionary skills that build confidence in written communication.

Handwriting

Beginning with letter formation patterns in kindergarten, students progress through continuous-stroke writing to develop legible, attractive handwriting. Cursive instruction begins in second grade.

Mathematics

Our math program builds strong number sense by progressing from hands-on manipulatives to abstract concepts. Students develop computational fluency, problem-solving skills, and mathematical reasoning through real-world applications.

Science

Students explore God's creation through hands-on experiments, scientific inquiry, and STEM activities. Beginning with a young-earth, Biblical foundation, students learn to observe, analyze data, and apply scientific knowledge to real-world problems.

Social Studies

Our heritage studies program develops students' understanding of geography, history, economics, government, and culture. Students learn to evaluate historical events and world cultures from a Biblical worldview while building citizenship skills.
